Robert McCormick gives a narrated tour of the Schoenstein Organ at Saint Paul’s Parish K Street

Mr. Robert McCormick, Director of Music, at St. Paul’s Parish, K Street

January 28, 2012

Saint Paul’s Parish K Street has one of the finest music programs in all of Washington DC and is blessed with a fabulous Schoenstein Pipe Organ, several excellent choirs and their Music Director, Robert McCormick, who is universally respected for his superb musical skills in the organ world.

The Schoenstein Pipe Organ was designed to accompany the Anglican Service and has a rich selection of colourful solo stops and soft effects, as well as ensembles for brilliant hymn playing. It was modelled upon the work of Henry Willis, builder of organs at Saint Paul’s, London, and Salisbury Cathedral. The smallest pipe is pencil-sized; the largest pipe is 18.5 feet tall, 2 square feet in dimension and weighs 430 pounds. The weight of the organ is approximately 32,000 pounds. There are 40 miles of wire in the console, relay action and wind chests.

A.R. Schopp’s Sons starts repairs to Our Lady of Refuge Reed Ranks

February 15, 2012

Great progress is being made in both Warrensburg, Missouri and Alliance, Ohio on the Our Lady of Refuge pipe organ, thanks to the hundreds of people who made small donations to the Organ Fund.

The craftsmen at A. R. Schopp’s Sons started taking three of the ranks of reeds out of storage to clean them. The ranks that are being worked on are the Clarinet, Oboe and Vox Humana.

All of the pipes will be inspected for what repairs need to be made. They will all be taken apart, cleaned, have new brass wedges installed to replace the deteriorated wooden ones, have the phosphor-bronze tuning wires replaced and finally they will be given to the voicers. It doesn’t look like many of the scrolls have to be replaced, though it would have been nice if Kilgen didn’t use common metal.

The reeds from the Swell Organ were in very good condition and needed little more than cleaning. A few Oboe pipes have “bowed” but these can be easily repaired. The pipes from the Great/Choir chamber need more work – this is where the leaks through the walls were the worst. This has resulted in bad “sugaring” of many of the Clarinet pipes. Sugaring is another name for oxidation, or “rusting”. This is not a good thing. The Clarinet pipes will be cleaned and scrubbed and given a coat of paint. Some pipes will require metal repair work and a few pipes might need to be replaced with duplicates.

Beethoven Symphonies transcribed for organ. Played on the Merklin & Schutzer Pipe Organ in Murcia Spain

Merklin & Schutze Organ in the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Murica, Spain

This extraordinary double Hybrid SACD (2 hrs and 40 min playing time) offers two world premieres: rediscovered organ works by Edouard Batiste (1820-1876) played on an impressive 4-manual French symphonic organ (1857) that had never been recorded before: the Merklin & Schütze organ of Murcia Cathedral (Spain).

Edouard Batiste who was called an “organ tamer” was one of the most famous French virtuosos in the 19th century. He worked as an advisor for the Merklin & Schütze organ company and inaugurated many of their new instruments. He himself was titular organist of Saint-Eustache in Paris and composed his organ music for the Ducroquet organ (1854) in that church.

Midnight Interview with Peter Conte at the Wanamaker Organ

The General Public being thrilled by Peter Conte playing the Wanamaker Organ

November 25, 2011

Over Thanksgiving I was back in Philadelphia and it was great to see old friends again. After visiting with Curt Mangel at his favorite watering hole we both walked over for the midnight opening of the store. I planned to meet up with Peter Conte to visit him and this resulted in an impromptu demonstration of some of the stops on the Wanamaker Organ. I was happy to finally do this. Please keep in mind I recorded this with a hand held digital recorder. The sound is very clear but the mics were not “placed” in the room – nor is it the kind of equipment I use to make my CDs. I think you will greatly enjoy the results.

Progress Report on the Our Lady of Refuge Organ Restoration

The Our Lady of Refuge Pedalboard after its rebuild

January 17, 2012

Because of the generosity of so many people in the Organ World and in the Our Lady of Refuge Parish we are making quick progress with the console. This work is being paid for by all of those people who sponsored pipes in the organ and purchased the Resurrectio CD. It is truly magnificent what is being accomplished. I hope this serves as a model for other churches that don’t have people who can write large checks to repair, restore or purchase a pipe organ for their church.

Thanksgiving Christmas Sing Along at Longwood Gardens

Joe Vitacco with a 32' Bombarde behind him at Longwood Gardens

November 24 & 25, 2011

Well this past Thanksgiving was a bit different. We “went out” for dinner. Little did I know that I would enjoy a truly excellent dinner within 3 feet of the recreated Aeolian Console at Longwood Gardens. It wasn’t planned, really it wasn’t. Nor did I think I would be interviewing Peter Conte later Thanksgiving Day (really Nov 25th) at 12:30 am in the Grand Court which was FULL OF SHOPPERS!

Stephen Tharp plays St. Bavo, Haarlem, The Netherlands on the JAV label was called “the most beautiful CD of 2009” by Resmusica in France.

Stephen Tharp earned his BA degree, magna cum laude, from Illinois College, Jacksonville, IL and his MM from Northwestern University, Chicago, where he studied with Rudolf Zuiderveld and Wolfgang Rübsam, respectively. He has also worked privately with Jean Guillou in Paris.

The organ at Grace Church, Brooklyn Heights was installed in 2001 by Bruce Buchanan and Austin Organs, Inc. of Hartford, Conn. Some 15 of its 69 ranks of pipes came from the instrument installed in 1887 in the church by the organbuilders Hilborne and Frank Roosevelt, cousins of Theodore, in 1887. The more than 3,700 pipes and 70 stops make the instrument a showcase for the organ literature of all periods.

Advance Tickets at $20 can be ordered from the Website of Our Lady of Refuge Church in Brooklyn, at http://www.olrbrooklyn.org/nov18/. Tickets for a post-concert reception at Grace Church can also be purchased, for $30, through the Our Lady of Refuge Website.
